Register on GS1
GS1 is a non-profit organization. In France, this institution is the only one authorized to assist companies in acquiring the PNG barcode. It operates updates of this type of code, following international rules.

To obtain permission to create your barcode, you must register on the GS1 platform. You will need to fill out a membership form and provide certain information. To validate your registration, you must make the payment of the registration fees. After that, you will receive your company identification code.
Using Microsoft Office
You can also generate a barcode for free using Microsoft Office. Indeed, with it, you can create a type 138 barcode. However, if you want to create an EAN or UPC barcode, the process is complicated. For that, you will necessarily need to use an EAN or UPC scanner.

If you do not have these tools, it will be impossible for you to create one. For the 138 barcode, you just need to use Microsoft Excel. You will need to enter the information for your barcode. These are as follows:
- In cell A1, the type;
- In cell B1, the labels;
- In cell C1, the barcode;
- In cell A2, the code 128;
- In cell B2, the prefix of the barcode in addition to the product number. At this stage, you need to be careful to properly separate the two numbers with a “+”;
- In cell C2, report the barcode prefix and the product number.
After filling in the information, you must check carefully to correct any possible errors. Then, save the created file and close Excel.
Now, open Word and continue creating your barcode in a new document. Click on “mailings” and when the toolbar opens, click on “labels.” You will have access to a popup “Envelope and label.” However, to choose the type of label that suits you best, you will need to make some adjustments.
- First, make the choice by clicking on “Avery US Letter” in the “Label vendors” menu;
- Then, click on “5 161 Address Labels” in the “Reference number” menu;
- And confirm your choice by clicking on “OK.”
These various settings are essential.
When the new popup window opens, select the “New document” option. A new document with outlined boxes will appear. Once again, select the “Mailings” option, click on “Select recipients,” then on “Use an existing list.” Now return to Excel and select your previously created file. Once your file is open, click again on the “Mailings” option and then on “Insert merge field.” This will allow you to access the “Insert merge field” tab.
In this menu, click on “Type,” and you will be redirected to the document {MERGEFIELD Type}. You need to repeat the same process by choosing “Labels” this time. This action will display {MERGEFIELD Labels}. Repeat this process again by clicking on “Barcode” to display {MERGEFIELD Barcode}.
Then continue by inserting a “:” between {MERGEFIELD Type} and {MERGEFIELD Labels}. For {MERGEFIELD Barcode}, place it on a new line. Then, replace {MERGEFIELD Barcode} with {MERGEBARCODE Barcode CODE128} using your keyboard.
Finally, select the “Finish & Merge” tab and then choose “Edit individual documents…”. Make sure you have checked that the “All” option is selected and confirm by clicking on “Ok.”
Using online generators

Once your choice is made, you will just need to select the barcode format you want. The generator will create the codes for you. At this stage, you will need to define the image format and save the product details.
